Reading a Korean Industrial Power Contract for Mining Loads
Before we draw a single rack position, we ask clients for their 전력 사용 계약 (power usage contract). Korean industrial leases bundle electricity differently than residential or commercial office contracts. Misreading the demand charge clause has sunk more mining projects than bad hardware choices.
Contracted kW vs. Peak kW
Your contract states a contracted capacity in kW — say 1,500 kW. That is sustained draw, not peak. Mining hardware at 0.05 TH/s and above typically runs 24/7 near nameplate. We budget 90% of contracted kW for hashing load, reserving 10% for cooling fans, pumps, and lighting.
Demand Charge Windows
Some industrial parks in Gyeongsang charge demand penalties for 15-minute peaks above contracted kW. Startup surges when you energise a full bay can trigger this. We sequence bay power-up in the assessment install plan to stay under the threshold.
Voltage and Phase
Most Korean industrial feeds are 380 V three-phase. Confirm whether your PDU cabling is sized for 220 V line-to-neutral loads on each leg. We have seen 200 A main breakers with undersized sub-feeds to remote warehouse wings.
Landlord Restrictions
Lease addendums in Daegu industrial parks sometimes cap total wattage per square metre. One client discovered a 150 W/m² clause after ordering hardware. We redistributed racks to a second building on the same campus.
